Dear Parents,
In January in-class EAL support focused on building language and literacy skills through
supporting the transdisciplinary theme Who We Are – Senses, and the central idea: We use
our senses to experience and interpret the world around us. Students inquired into five sens-
es, how we use our senses, the interconnected nature of senses, etc. The EAL group of stu-
dents explored various objects as we walked around the school and looked for special objects
and sounds. We wrote down the words and phrases as students observed different sounds.
Then we reviewed 5 senses we used in our research. Connecting to a previous unit about the
use of symbols and non-verbal communication, the students were encouraged by touching a
hand, eye, mouth, ear, and nose. This unit provided excellent opportunities for all students to
be inquirers and risk-takers. Apart from the inquiry, the students continued writing their
daily journals with teacher’s support. They described pictures they drew and wrote sentences
focusing on basic sight words and making letter – sound correlation. Our reading sessions
included talking about simple picture books, reading, and writing basic sight words (is, are,
in, at). We also focused on identifying initial, middle and end sounds.
Great work, Kindergarten A and B!
