Dear Parents,
In the previous weeks students have been working on the unit of inquiry ‘Who We Are
– Senses,’ as a connection to their learning in the homeroom.
Students were exploring the sense of hearing, sight, and touch, while painting with
their hands in groups, drawing, and creating collages. Students have started to learn
that everything that has a rough surface has texture. To start developing the under-
standing of texture, students were exploring texture through feeling different surfaces
with their hands in the classroom, school yard, and in their work while creating collag-
es. Students continued to learn about the use of contrasting colors in order to make
their work stand out. Learning about contrasting colors is ongoing in Kindergarten and
we will work on it in the following months as well.
We often play games through which children work with one sense taken out so they
can develop an understanding of how much they rely on their senses in everyday life. It
has been fun to watch them enjoy the games while trying to draw with their eyes
closed, by other students’ instructions, or trying to guess a color they are using without
watching.
These games are designed to help students understand that our senses are intercon-
nected.
