Dear Parents,
In February we supported the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works – the Scientists unit, and
its central idea: Forces change the way objects move.
EAL students inquired into the specific vocabulary we use in order to identify different ways in
which objects can move (verbs: rotate, spin, accelerate, float, sink, etc.; nouns: science, scientist, ex-
periment, magnetism, gravity, etc.). In-class support also focused on explaining different types of
natural forces, and the processes that scientists use when they want to prove their hypothesis in or-
der to better understand and explain the world around us.
We continued building literacy skills through various reading and writing activities. We focused on
paraphrasing skills, and writing a report based on the non-fiction articles we analyzed as a class. The
reading group kept on reading leveled books, focusing on developing fluency and comprehension.
We continued explaining new words using synonyms/antonyms, developing our vocabulary and
spelling, as well as learning grammar in context. We continued paying attention to the sequence of
events when retelling fiction stories. We also enforced the First Steps writing genre – writing to re-
port. We reviewed words to indicate sequence, time and order, and students used them in their writ-
ing. We continued our year long focus on developing simple/compound sentences, and writing con-
ventions: capital letters and basic punctuation.
