Dear Parents,
In February in-class EAL support focused on building language and literacy skills through
supporting the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works – Simple Machines, and the
central idea: Simple machines use force to make work easier.
Students inquired into how and why people use simple machines, what do simple machines
consist of, how they use force, etc.
All kindergarten students, including the EAL group, visited a nearby construction site, and
took notes of different objects used by workers in building a house. We talked about differ-
ent tools that help people save time and energy, and also explained how they are used.
Apart from the inquiry, the students continued writing their daily journals with teacher’s sup-
port. They described pictures they drew and wrote sentences focusing on basic sight words
and making letter – sound correlation. We practiced speaking skills, as we asked different
questions starting with: who, what, when, where, why, and how. We focused on answering
these questions using complete sentences.
We also started our reading stations, as we read simple repetitive picture books. We made
predictions based on the cover page, and pictures in the book. We also practiced writing
basic sight words that we found in the book. The EAL students enjoyed a game that focused
on developing the use prepositions and building compound sentence structure.
Great work, Kindergarten A and B!
